As the Page Turns

As the Page Turns is a monthly post contributed by Karen Wallace, director of the Osborne Public Library. It summarizes happenings at the library during the previous month and highlights upcoming events and programs.

Enroll in Fall Programs - The summer activities are finished and it is time to enroll in the 2016-17 programs. Story hour will be on Friday mornings, Wednesday After Class for K-grade 3, and Monday After Class for grades 4-6. Stop by the library and pick up an enrollment form if you do not already have one. We are gearing up for a great school year of programming.

Share a Story – July 7th Smoky Hills Public Television brought Share-A-Story to the library. This activity was for the preschool children and they had a great time with Curious George.

KHC – On July 14th the library was happy to host Laura Hartley from the Kansas Humanities Council. She gave a program on women in sports and famous Kansas women in sports entitled, Throw Like a Girl. It was a great program filled with facts and issues that women have encountered as they have entered in the sport arena.

Digging for Dinos – On July 21st the library hosted a program from the Sternberg Museum on dinosaurs. We had a library full of almost 100 people for this event. It was very informative and fossils were displayed for the participants to see.

Swim Party – 60 kids participated in an afternoon swim to end our summer library programs on July 22nd. The awesome staff at the Osborne City Pool showed the kids an example of a drowning victim and a save. This helps the children know why the lifeguards are on duty and why they should listen to them. The afternoon ended with prizes and snacks.

Fair – The library was busy at the Osborne County Fair this year with a booth, a display in the poultry barn and a story walk, “The Big Read Barn,” that was scattered around the fairgrounds.

Back to School Fair – The library also set up a story walk at the OEA Back To School Fair. This book was titled, “Back To School Rules.” All story walk boards, books, and stands were made possible with funds through the Greater Salina Area Foundations and the Dane G. Hansen Foundation.

Book of the Month – The book discussion for the August books has been scheduled for August 25th at 5:30 pm. The book that will be discussed is “Defending Jacob” by William Landay. If you want to participate, let the library staff know and they will get a book in for you.
